01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
About this place
Set quietly on the 1st floor of the Mori Ogai Memorial Museum in Bunkyo Ward's Sendagi neighborhood, Morikine Cafe welcomes both museum visitors and passersby seeking a tranquil retreat. Wide windows frame the greenery of the courtyard garden outside, creating a gentle atmosphere where you can comfortably let time slow down.
Local Tastes Meet German Influences on One Plate
The signature Morikine Plate takes cues from the years literary figure Mori Ogai spent studying in Germany. Fragrant pretzels from the O-okayama bakery Schomaker arrive alongside semi-dry sausage and deeply flavored corned beef from a local Sendagi butcher, accompanied by sauerkraut, pickles, and yogurt—a harmonious meal uniting local neighborhood craft with German culinary traditions. There is also the Morikine Sandwich, served on dense Roggenbrot rye bread with sausage, sauerkraut, and cream cheese, where the robust grain notes balance the crisp acidity of the fillings.
Unwinding with Hand-Drip Coffee and House Drinks
The beverage lineup features hot pour-over coffee made with a blend of Brazilian and Colombian beans, as well as an iced coffee with a pleasant roasted bitterness. Other distinctive house touches include a 3-color float inspired by the German flag, dry German wines, and Morikine Beer carrying an original label, making a stop here feel distinct from an ordinary cafe break.
Orders are placed at the counter upon arrival, keeping the dining room peaceful and unhurried. Whether you are pausing mid-walk through the historic Yanesen district or settling in for an afternoon of quiet reading, it serves as an easy, understated haven.
